Rock
Rock
The rock music genre entered the music mainstream in the mid 1950s and was popularized by many emerging rock bands at the time who dared to bring a new sound into the world of music. When a person hears the word rock in music, he or she immediately thinks of hard rock and roll and imagines long-haired people thrashing around on the stage and shouting out lyrics. There are different kinds of rock music and this popular image is only one of them.

Types of Rock Music
One type of rock music is hard rock. This is the type of music that always first comes to mind when people hear the word rock. This sub-genre of rock music has its roots in garage and psychedelic rock. It is considered to be harder than conventional rock music and is characterized by the heavy use of keyboards, pianos, drums, bass guitar and distorted electric guitars.
Another sub-genre of rock music is soft rock. This style of music is also referred to as light rock or easy rock and makes use of rock and roll techniques to create a softer, more toned-down sound that people can listen to even at work or while driving. Songs of this sub-genre focus more on themes such as love, everyday life as well as relationships. There is also use of electric guitars in this sub-genre but the sound is normally faint and high-pitched.
Classic rock is another sub-genre of rock music that now features a large playlist of songs. These songs date back from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and even the early 1990s. Classical rock songs appeal mainly to adults rather than teenagers.
Rock Music Variations
Rock music has gone a long way and has overcome many variations. One type of variation that became increasingly popular back then and now is rock ballads. These songs are characterized by having slow tempo, long voiced notes, the use of electric or acoustic guitars, and de-emphasis on percussion and bass. Themes of ballads commonly revolve around emotional pain, need, love and loss.
