What is Pop?

Pop is one genre of music that features a noticeable rhythmic element, melodies, hooks, mainstream style and a convenient structure. It is a music genre that was created to provide a lighter alternative to other form of music, one of them being rock and roll. When one hears a pop song, one can always tell whether it is pop or not.

The term pop was first used in the year 1926 as a shortened term to "having popular appeal". Back in the days, when pop was first introduced into the world of music, it immediately became an instant hit and the genre became popular, hence the term pop.

Pop songs are traditionally less than five minutes long and use instrumentation that ranges from an orchestra to a single singer. Often these songs are lively and have lyrics that can cover any topics. The pop genre can appeal to many individuals but are most popular with kids and adolescents.

Pop singers can have different kinds of voices but often these are young, talented artists looked at as idols for many of the young generation. Singers can range from one individual to a group where the much known "boy band" and "girl band" started.

In order for the pop genre to be successful, it has to have a great sound, must be comprised of a great singer or singers, and the finished musical product must also be attractive and appealing to both young and old audiences. Pop covers of musical albums can range from jolly, whimsical to contemporary and modern. The common factor with the album covers of this genre, is that it always expresses the main theme of the album or expresses something about the singer or singers.

People can now listen to pop music through the Internet via audio streaming, video streaming, or through downloadable pop songs.
